For sales tax exemption certificates to remain valid in the eyes of an auditor, they will need to be renewed.
The question is: When?
While some certificates never expire, in most states there will come a time when the certificate on file for a customer is no longer valid. Some need to be renewed every three years. In others, it’s five. And occasionally, a state might change its requirements from five years to three.
Staying ahead of expiration dates will reduce your audit risk by ensuring customers have ample time to submit new certificates.
